Talking about epilepsy with kids

Recently I had a talk with 10 year old Drew Matheieson and his father. Due to unfortunate circumstances his mother is suffering from epilepsy. Little Drew was very scared when he saw the seizure for the first time. He recently came to Allen Institute to talk to me about seizures and the brain. We have spend about an hour talking about brain dynamics, seizures and excitation-inhibition balance. He was very sharp and asked good questions. After talking he became more calm, since he understood what seizures are and how do they affect the normal brain function. Unfortunately we could not help his mother and 50 000 000 of other people in the world suffering form epilepsy right now. But hopefully our research would help us to move forward and find better cures for this disorder in the future.
